In Loving Memory of Veeda Roselyn Neil
Veeda Roselyn Neil, lovingly known as Miss Joyce, Aunt Joyce, and affectionately called Moonie by her grandchildren, was born on December 18, 1933, in Montego Bay, Jamaica. She peacefully departed this life on July 3, 2026, at Norwalk Hospital, Norwalk Connecticut at the age of 92. Veeda's passing reflected the grace with which she lived her life—quietly and peacefully.
Veeda was the cherished only child of Hilda Maude Vassell and the beloved stepdaughter of Geddes George Vassell. She received her education in Montego Bay before spending much of her adult life in Kingston, Jamaica. She frequently visited her Uncle Harold Vassell in Guys Hill, St. Catherine, where she assisted in operating his grocery store and bar. It was there that fate intervened, and she met the love of her life, Arthnel Roy Neil, whom she later married.
A woman of unwavering faith, Veeda embodied kindness, generosity, and compassion. She was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and was known for her warm spirit and welcoming heart. She had a deep love for music and rarely resisted the irresistible rhythm of reggae. Even as age brought physical challenges, Veeda's joyful spirit remained undiminished. When her legs grew weak, she simply adapted, becoming a master of "chair dancing" and continuing to move with the same energy and enthusiasm.
Veeda's work ethic was nothing short of extraordinary. After immigrating to the United States in the late 1960s, she worked diligently as a housekeeper. Determined to create a more secure future for herself and her family, she pursued certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Her passion for caring for others led her to serve residents at Notre Dame, Lea Manor and Strawberry Hill Nursing Homes. Never one to shy away from hard work, she worked night shifts caring for patients while continuing to clean homes during the day for many years. Her resilience, dedication, and commitment to service were an inspiration to all who knew her.
Veeda found immense joy in cooking, expressing her love through every meal she prepared. Her stew peas, rice and peas were legendary, and her rum cake and potato pudding were cherished family favorites. Her mastery of lasagna, beef patties, sorrel, and ginger beer were equally celebrated. During the holidays, Veeda transformed family gatherings into unforgettable feasts. Thanksgiving was never just turkey and mashed potatoes—it was a rich and abundant spread that reflected our Jamaican favorites and lasagna, of course.
Above all else, Veeda's greatest devotion was to her family. She worked tirelessly and sacrificed selflessly to provide opportunities and a brighter future for her children. The love she poured into her family became her greatest legacy. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the pride of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with them. Through them, her spirit, values, and love will continue to live on for generations.
Veeda leaves behind her loving daughters: Diana Napier (Norbert), Donna Simmons (Roosevelt), and Juliet Neil, all of Norwalk, Connecticut. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Nordia Napier Watson, Dineen Napier, Nathan Page, Jr., Travis Page, Justice Page, Shawn Simmons, Shavonne Simmons, and Brandon Simmons; and her cherished great-grandchildren: Julian Watson, Evan Watson, Josiah Wright, Malia Wright, and Kayden Wright. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, sister-in-law: Irma Thomas, brother-in-law: Lavern Neale, and many close family friends who lovingly knew her as Aunt Joyce.
Veeda was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Arthnel Roy Neil; her stepbrother, Harold Vassell; and her stepsister, Doris Vassell.
Though her earthly journey has ended, Veeda's legacy of faith, perseverance, generosity, and unconditional love will remain forever in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her. Her life was a testament to strength, sacrifice, and grace—a beautiful example of a life well lived and a love well shared.
Sleep on Veeda, take your rest, the battle is fought and won. We will see you soon and very soon.
