Judith Marie Neal
July 20, 1943 – November 27, 2025
In celebration of the life of Judith Marie Neal, born July 20, 1943, in Vance County North Carolina in the Town of Kittrell.
Judy was beloved by many. Whether sister, aunt, great-aunt or even second grandmother – she had an eye for detail and could bring a sparkling warm light to every life she touched. Young at heart, Judy loved to travel, spend time with family and friends, try out new recipes and listen to music. Judy loved doing all kinds of puzzles and she was an avid jig-saw hobbyist with several framed completions. She also loved butterflies and collecting seashells. Another favorite pastime was following her favorite team, the UConn Huskies. Judy rarely missed watching a great match or game on TV. Not only was she a big sports fan, she was also an accomplished bowler who earned numerous trophies and other recognition for her notable achievements.
Judy grew up in Vance County, the youngest of nine children – the only to be born in a hospital. Through her large and loving family, she learned the importance of faith, family, love, humor and giving to others. In 1963 Judy moved from North Carolina to New York and later settled in Stratford, Connecticut. There she joined family and began a new chapter in her life.
Some knew her as Judith, a trusted friend, a confidante you could come to for help at any time. She was always happy to share her time with an open heart and clear mind. She was devoted to her extended family and friends - always giving 100% support. If you needed anything at all, she’d find a way to help make it happen. She volunteered and participated in countless activities and events, joyfully donating time for walk-a-thons, donation drives, church fairs, festivals, and services at First Baptist Church of Stratford. As a faithful member of First Baptist Church, she served many years on the Sr. Usher board, as advisor to the Jr. Ushers, a member of the Floral club, and other clubs and auxiliaries. While volunteering at St. James School, Judy touched many lives - sharing her laughter and light with children and staff.
Some family you are born to, other family you make, and she was loved by all. Not only was she devoted to her own family, but she also provided a generation of love and support to the Steiber family. As their household manager for over 40 years, Judy worked for Attorney Richard Steiber and Dr. Judith Steiber, PhD. The relationship started as employer and employee, but soon she was considered a close and cherished family friend.
One thing we can all agree to call her was “on time.” Judy’s always first to join in on the fun. You could count on her to be present and accounted for. Her love for life was unmatched – whether going to a game, a quick shopping trip, or joining friends and family for an evening of ice cream and TV. Even when she couldn’t be there in person, she’d be a happy virtual co-pilot on the phone during long car trips. Judy was always ready to go! She was the family curator, often taking pictures and videos at family events. We cherish all those memories even more, knowing we shared them with her.
Judith is lovingly remembered by her brother John Neal, his wife Agnes, her sister-in-law Naomi Neal, devoted niece and caregiver Patricia “Pat” Soltis Agnew, along with a very close host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and all the unofficial grandchildren she babysat and helped raise along the way. She joins in rest her parents, Molly and Perry Neal, and siblings Sadie Higgs, Perry Neal, Elizabeth Perry, Louise Thomas, Mabel Cole, Shirley Davis, and Gerald Neal.
