Dorothy Mae Hill

–

Bridgeport, Connecticut

Mrs. Dorothy Mae Nixon Hill was born to the late Jessie and Mary Nixon on January 30, 1949. She entered into eternal rest on June 25, 2020.

She was born in Sumpter, South Carolina, then moved to Bridgeport, CT. She was educated in the Bridgeport School System. She lived in Bridgeport until she departed this life. As a longtime resident she built and raised her family in the city that she loved. She married the late Samuel Lee Hill Sr. on December 24, 1968 a union that lasted a beautiful 51 years, and out of this union they had 5 children.

Dorothys life was dedicated to serving others in as many ways as possible. Dorothy professional cared for others by first working for Saint Theresas in Trumbull, CT where she singlehandedly cared for the parishs priest ensuring they were well taken care of. Later she accepted employment at St. Vincents Special Needs Center where she was an Assistant Teacher. For over 31 years she was instrumental in the education and developmental growth of children with disabilities; a job that she cherished even after she retired. Mrs. Hill cared for the children she taught like they were a part of her own family; she would attend their recitals, cheer for them at their plays or sporting events, visit their homes and churches. Most of all she would invest her time and attention into their personal lives. She wanted to make sure that every child who she was responsible for would feel loved, encouraged, and accomplished despite their physical setbacks. Dorothy was a highly decorated employee, receiving many awards and accolades for her innovative style of work and dedication to the organization.

Dorothy enjoyed church and was not new to religion as a matter of fact Dorothy first confessed Christ in her youth back in Sumpter, South Carolina where she was baptized. Her relationship with God was fostered and developed further when she became a member of Faith Outreach Apostolic Church under the leadership of Overseer Carrie Loyd and Pastor Cynthia Bellamy. With great reverence for God Dorothy joined the Mothers Board at Faith Outreach and would use her gift of cooking (and a gift it was) by joining the cooking committee. She understood that God was her help and she knew that there was a mansion being prepared for the people of God. She would often remind her family of this quoting St. John 14:1-6 so they too would know that God had a plan for them outside of what they could see here on Earth. She was not selfish with her faith she would often bring her children, grandchildren, even her great grandchildren into the house of God to experience His power. One thing was for sure when she got ready for service she would be dressed to impress with the most beautiful garments and her jewels shining. She always made sure to look great for the God she served.

Saying she loved her family is an understatement she lived for them. Dorothy was close to her children and would often nickname them especially her daughters calling them; special daughter, bag-lady and the late one. Her family is what caused her to enjoy Sunday dinners and holiday get togethers. Dorothy would start preparing for Sundays meal on Saturday to make sure that every bite was seasoned with love. No one will forget the succulent flavors in her turkey. Luckily for her family she was willing to make it year around, so they didnt have to wait for Thanksgiving; she was already planning to have a turkey prepared for the 4th of July cookout. She fed everyone who was hungry, giving the illusion that the pot in her kitchen was bottomless. Her house always had guest because the community always felt welcome in her presence, she didnt meet strangers and once you were in her home you became her kin. It was just her nature to love on you and give you a good meal. She also loved to travel, if she wasnt at home with friends and family she was on a cruise with them. Shes been to Cozmel, Antigua, Hawaii, Jamaica, St Thomas, Barbados, California and the list goes on and on; yet no matter where she went she would bring back a piece of beautiful jewelry to commemorate the journey. She enjoyed shopping it was a relaxing experience for her. She did not let technology pass her by as soon as she got a smartphone she downloaded as many apps as her phone would hold, she even joined the social media world making a Facebook page and spending hours laughing at TikTok videos.

Dorothy had this incomparable ability to make life look simple no matter what was going on. She raised her children and assisted in raising her childrens children, maintained a career, kept the faith and did so with perfectly manicured nails and a smile.

She leaves behind 3 siblings, Juanuta Nixon, Cynthia Nixon, and Charlie Nixon (Sisters in law) Robin and Sharon Nixon. 5 children, Melissa Hill, Cynthia Hill Moody, Leroy Moody (Son in law) Mary Hill, Lola Hill, and Samuel Lee Hill Jr. 12 grandchildren, Dyshone Hill Sr, Christina Hill, Raquel Hill, Leroy Moody Jr, Collin Clarke, Alexander Clarke, Ashley Clarke, Samone Grant, Saadiq Moody, Heaven Hill Duco, Shaquon Hunt, and Essence Moody. A host of great grandchildren, family, co-workers, and friends. She was preceded in death by both parents, husband, 1 grandchild, 1 great grandchild, and 5 siblings. She was greatly loved and will be missed dearly.
