Salim Hasan Obituary (1949

Salim Hasan (f.k.a. Gary T. Dickson), 70, transitioned peacefully at home on Friday, May 1, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 14, 1949, son of Talmadge (Tam) Dickson and the late Fannie Mae Dickson. Salim received his early education from the Norwalk Public School System. He was a keen multi-sport athlete. He played baseball, basketball, football and received a MVP award at Brien McMahon High School. After graduating from Brien McMahon, he matriculated at Arizona State University YUMA where he majored in Architecture. While playing baseball at ASU, he was scouted by the San Francisco Giants and invited to their tryouts. Salim returned to Norwalk and joined the Norwalk Recreational Baseball League. Again, he was scouted and invited to tryouts, but this time by the Red Sox. We recall him saying that during tryouts, he was hitting home runs and pitching no hitters, but their eyes were not on him. The following year in 1975, Salim began practicing Martial Arts at Lees School of Judo, Karate and Hapkido in Darien, CT under Grand Master Yong-Man Lee. Salim became a national champion in Tang Soo Do, with 20 years of martial arts fighting competition and was elected member of the Tang Soo Do international team. Master Salim Hasan, 6th Dan in Tang Soo Do, instructed and mentored many master degree students and black belt students until 2020. He also continued his education at the University of Bridgeport where he received a Bachelor of Elective Sciences degree with a major in Social Sciences. Salim was a CT State Licensed Addictions Therapist with 44 years of experience. He worked for Liberation Programs, Inc. as Director of the Liberation House, Stamford CT, and also worked for CT Renaissance in Norwalk and Bridgeport, CT. He was a member of Bethel AME Church-Norwalk and later became a member of the Nation of Islam. He leaves to cherish loving memories to his beloved wife, Shukriyyah Miller-Hasan, daughters, Malina (Darrick) Hasan-Brown, Fatimah Patrice Hasan, son, Baaith Hasan, father Talmadge (Jeanette) Dickson, sisters, Diana Dickson, Cossette Brown, brothers, David (Myra) Dickson, Wayne Dickson, granddaughters, Nailah Hasan, Mecca Hasan Moss, Iyonnah Hasan, grandsons, Kieve Meluzzi, Justus Armstead and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his sister Gail T. Dickson.
