Rev. George B. Monts Obituary (1922

Reverend George B. Monts was born on February 22, 1922 in Americas, Georgia to the late George Hiran Monts and Margaree Addy Monts. On Saturday, August 14, 2010 in the quiet of the evening, the angles came to escort Reverend Monts home. He had mentioned someone was coming to pick him up and he was ready to go. Deacon George Monts met Annie Smith at Hopewell Baptist Church in Hartford, CT. He had said his heart skipped a beat. It was like Pentecost and on February 16, 1960 George B. Monts and Anne L. Monts were united in marriage by Reverend David S. Craig at Mount Moriah. Reverend George B. Monts received his Preachers License October 21, 1962 and was Ordained October 1, 1964 by the Late Reverend Dr. David S. Craig at Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Hartford, CT. While under the tutelage of Dr. Craig, Reverend Monts traveled to Great Barrington, MA on a regular basis to preach and teach the parishioners of the Macedonia Baptist Church. He was later appointed Pastor. In June of 1972, God, and the Mount Zion Baptist Church Family in Norwalk, CT called Reverend Monts to preach, teach and minister to Mount Zion Baptist Church congregation. Reverend Monts installation service was August 13, 1972. On November 5, 1972 Reverend Monts baptized 14 new members and gave the right hand of fellowship to 19 others. This membership continued to grow into well over three hundred members during his ministry. This achievement in itself was a great accomplishment, by the help of the Almighty God. Under the leadership of Reverend Monts the (GBM) Male Chorus, the Youth Choir, Mount Zion Baptist (MZB) Ensemble, Young Adult group and the Youth Ministry was organized. Also under Reverend Monts leadership, Mount Zion has undergone many physical changes. In 1999 the Church mortgage, 8 Raymond St. property and the Church parking lot was liquidated. Reverend Monts has done outstanding work in the 33 years he pastured Mount Zion. His work also extended into the community; he was a member of the Interdenominational Ministers Fellowship (IMF), Neon and the Fair Rent Commission. He was also associated with the Norwalk Police Department HELP program. Reverend Monts faithfully visited the sick in the area Hospitals and prayed with them and for them. Under the leadership of Reverend Monts Reverend Henry G. Floyd was ordained in May 1989. Reverend Monts ordained the First Women Preacher of Mount Zion, Reverend Patricia Quinones on December 8, 1996. He also took under his wings, three associates in the Ministry, The Late Minister George Bellamy, March 1997, Minister Steve Fulton, October 1999, and Minister Julius Gamble, September 1988. Prior to Reverend Monts retirement, he Ordained Reverend Fulton and Reverend Gamble. Reverend Monts has a saying Everybody needs somebody sometimes. He enjoyed working the garden, fishing and just walking around Norwalk. He has also been called the Mayor of South Norwalk. He was also known for his sweet tooth. Reverend Monts is survived by four daughters, Lois Monts Brown, Eula B. Merritt, Martha Ann Johnson, and Teresa Williams; A sister Martharee Monts (Luther) Carter; Grandchildren, Pastor Marichal B. Monts, Minister Kerry D. (Rotonja) Monts, Pastor Sean G. (Coretta) Monts, Pama N. (Tracy) Barber; sister-in-laws, Clara Monts and Kathleen Harris Monts; brother-in-law Alphonse Cooper; daughter-in-law Margaret A. Monts; goddaughter Minister Joann Brown Price, and a host of Great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and the entire Christian Community. He was predeceased by his wife, Annie L. Monts; a son James R. Monts; brothers, Joe E. Monts, John W. Monts, and James C. Monts; Sisters Rosalie Berry, Mary L. Ruddock, Emma D. Cooper, M. Ruth Monts, Annie E. Thomas and Betty Mae Monts. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 12:00 PM at Mount Zion Baptist Church 96 South Main Street, South Norwalk, CT. Friends may greet the family from 10:00 AM until time of service at the church. Interment at Riverside Cemetery.
