Mozella Burns Obituary (1940 - 2022) - Bridgeport, Connecticut

MOZELLA BURNS was born on February 7, 1940, in Clarksdale, Mississippi to the late James and Sadie Burns. She entered into eternal rest on June 24, 2022. She was the 5th child of 7 children. Mozella was a graduate of Roosevelt Elementary School and Bassick High School in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She attended Malcolm X College in Chicago, Illinois where she received an Associate Degree. She also attended Sacred Heart University, Fairfield University and the Connecticut Institute of Christian Religion. Mozellas extensive employment career included her first job in 1957 as a secretary for the City of Bridgeport at Central High School; Inspector of Naval Material, Bridgeport; Urban Gateways and Malcolm X College, Chicago, Illinois. She retired from General Electric Corporate Headquarters in 2005. While at General Electric she rose from the rank of Administrative Assistant to Resolve Administrator where she was responsible for administering the Alternate Dispute Resolution Program for General Electrics Corporate Staff throughout the United States. Mozella received this promotion in 1989 and hailed it as the perfect ending to her career at GE. Mozella received her Christian Education in Bethel A.M.E. Church in Bridgeport where she has been a member since 1948. She began playing the piano for Sunday School when she was a teenager. As a young adult, she was the pianist for the Junior Choir and the Childrens Choir and was a member of the Young Adult Choir. She was always willing to assist with the youth in the church school with plays during Christmas and Easter. She was serious about her relationship with the Lord and faithfully attended Prayer Meeting and Bible Study on Wednesdays. She did not hesitate to testify to anyone who would listen about the goodness of the Lord and the miracles that He performed in her life. Her favorite scripture is taken from II Chronicles 20:15Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but Gods." Mozella moved to Chicago in 1965 and was employed by Urban Gateways and Malcolm X College. She joined St. Stephens A.M.E. Church where she immediately became a member of their Gospel Choir. She returned to Bridgeport in 1978 and swiftly renewed her membership with Bethel Bridgeport. She was a dedicated and active member serving in various ministries: Gospel Choir, Senior Choir, Class Leader, Stewardess Board #2, Blanche Wideman Missionary Society, Member of the Steward Board, Beautillion Committee, Hospitality Club, Lay Organization, Board of Christian Education, Co-Church Historian, and Pianist for the Senior Choir and Mens Chorus and any other area where she could lend her help, willingly and with a smile. She was recognized as Lay Person of the Year several times. Mozella was also active in the Bridgeport community. Some of her activities included: Board of Directors for Mercy Learning Center, Housatonic Girl Scouts, Minority Agenda Political Action Committee (MAPAC); Member of the following clubs and organizations: Bridgeport Chapter of the Negro Business and Professional Womens Clubs, Inc., AACP, Greater Bridgeport Federation of Black Democrats, Elfin-Fairfield County Chapter. She also made time to volunteer for Bridgeport Hospital, Read Aloud Day, Goodwill Industries, Habitat for Humanity Project, Zoo Project-Beardsley Park, Toys for Kids (Angel Tree). Other interests included free-lance writing for the Connecticut Post, Afro-Voice Review, Inner City News and The Chrysanthemum (Mercy Learning Center). Her hobbies included reading, writing short stories and poetry, playing the piano and traveling. Mozella leaves behind to cherish her memories two brothers David Burns and Edward Burns (Glenda) of Bridgeport, CT, Special Nieces; Tanya Evans and Brianna Mebane of Bridgeport, CT, special Sister friends; Judythe Jackson, Jane Campbell and Cynthia Beaver as well as a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Mozella was predeceased by her parents, James and Sadie Burns, two brothers, Robert Burns and James (Dubba) Morris; two sisters, Catherine Henton and Beatrice Burns. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at 11:00 AM, Bethel AME Church, 110 Grove Street, Bridgeport, CT. Family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until time of service at the church. Interment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery, 885 Boston Ave, Bridgeport, CT.
