Gertrude Oliver Cox Obituary (1911

Gertrude Oliver Cox, daughter of George and Nannie Oliver was born September 19, 1911, in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. In her early years she attended the Virginia public school system, before moving to the city of Bridgeport at age 14, where she continued her education in the Bridgeport public school system. She was employed by D.M. Read's Company as an Elevator Operator for 43 years. The customers at Read's could always depend on Gertrude's warm demeanor and pleasant smile. She was a lifetime member of Messiah Baptist Church. During her tenure at Messiah, she was an active member of the Happy Hour Club, Deaconess Board and the Veri Mici Social Club. October 1933, Gertrude and Roy Cox were united in holy matrimony. This union lasted 55 years. Roy passed in 1988. From this marriage came two daughters; Barbara and Beverly. During their daughter's childhood, Gertrude was involved in the Brownies, Girl Scouts and other activities. On Thursday morning, May 15, 2008 at approximately 2:00 am, while a resident at Astoria Park Nursing Home, Gertrude took her place with her Lord. She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving daughter, Beverly Lewis of Stratford, CT; three grand children, Ricardo Gomez (Barbara) of Carthage, NC; John Lewis of New York City and Damon Lewis (Kiesha) of Stratford; five great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, and daughter Barbara Gomez, five sisters and three brothers. Funeral Services were Monday, May 19, 2008, at Messiah Baptist Church, 210 Congress Street, Bridgeport with Rev. Tyrone Jones officiating, and Interment in Lakeview Cemetery, 885 Boston Avenue, Bridgeport, Connecticut.
