Earley Pettway Obituary (1937

Deputy Chief Earley Pettway, age 76, of Bridgeport, CT went home to be with the Lord on September 28, 2013. He was born in Boykin, Alabama to the late Clay and Leah Pettway. A graduate of Boykin High School, he served as an Air Policeman in the United States Air Force from September of 1960 1964. Earl is married to Nell Pettway who is also a native of Boykin, Alabama. He is the father of Christopher Pettway and the late Steven D. Pettway. He is also an outstanding member of Mount Aery Baptist Church of Bridgeport, CT. Earl was appointed to the Bridgeport Fire Department on August 1, 1977. He was assigned to Truck Number 6 at Barnum and Central Avenue. In February of 1983, he was assigned to Engine Number 8 as a Provisional Lieutenant. In May of 1988 he was promoted to Permanent Lieutenant. He was promoted to Captain in January 1991, at Engine Companies 6 and 8, and also served as House Captain until August of the same year. During August of 1991, Earl was assigned to Car Number 2 as a Provisional Assistant Chief on Bridgeports West Side. He served there for 2 years, and was transferred to the East Side to Car Number 3. Earl was promoted to Permanent Assistant Chief in June of 1995. Then on August 26, 1998 he was promoted to Provisional Deputy Chief, until his retirement on April 21, 2001. In addition to his wife and son, Earl leaves to cherish his memory four brothers, Ace, Daniel, Willie and Samuel Pettway; 4 sisters, Rosa Thomas, Eartha Foster, Shirley Goode and Corine Myles; a goddaughter, Anita Leah Roland and a host of family and friends. Friends may greet the family on Friday, October 4, 2013 at the Mount Aery Baptist Church, 73 Frank St, Bridgeport, CT from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 12:00 PM. The Rev. Dr. Anthony L. Bennett will be officiating. Interment to follow at Lakeview Cemetery.
