Daniel Colter, Sr. Obituary (1924

Daniel Colter Sr. was born February 18, 1924 in Elizabeth, Orangeburg County, South Carolina to the late John and Estelle (Fields) Colter. He departed this life Friday, January 3, 2020. He lived to a blessed age of 95 years old. In his lasts days with sound mind and the hope of the glory to come he remained steadfast, greeting visitor with a soft voice and smile. As a youth he learned the importance of hard work from his maternal grandfather Daniel Fields. He left South Carolina and headed North in the early 1940s, living in Columbia, SC, Philadelphia, PA, Bronx, NY with his oldest sister Sarah for a short while. At 19 years old, he ultimately landed in Bridgeport, CT and found employment in the many factories of the times, aka defense plants during WWII. After the war he worked at Decca Records Pressing Plant. He had access to all the latest music which made him very popular, being invited to all the parties, he was somewhat of a disc jockey. He married Lenora (Gibson) Colter; they were married over 40 years and had five children. Dan was well known and highly respected, he earned the reputation as one of the hardest working men in Bridgeport. He retired from Bridgeport Brass Company after 30 years and never stopped working. He worked well into his 80s, hauling things in his truck, as a school crossing guard, janitor, etc. He often said, "it was Gods plan for man to work and he did not want to disappoint God", another saying of his was, "make a dollar, save a dollar and then spend a dollar" in that order. He looked after friends and family who no longer could help themselves, taking them to doctors appointments, grocery shopping, running errands and spending time with themhe called it checking on folks. He loved being surrounded by his grandchildren and great grands and provided for his family with his whole heart while passing on the lessons of hard work. He was an avid supporter and member of Mt. Aery Baptist Church, pressing his way to service until the age of 87. A hard-working man, a man of good reputation and respect and most of all a man of faith. He was preceded in death by his wife Lenora (Gibson) Colter and a daughter Lorraine (Colter) Gay, four sisters, Sarah Dungie, Carrie Bell Pugh, Martha Mosley, Blondell Dash; three brothers, John, Ben and Isiah Colter and a special nephew Willie B. Colter Sr., Daniel Colter leaves to cherish his memories his children, Daniel (Kim) Colter, Upper Marlboro, MD, and Joyce, Michael, John Colter of Bridgeport, CT and Carlos (April) Thompson of Antioch, CA; grandchildren who were reared in the home, Kenyon, Lakeisha and Tanesha Gay; Victoria Colter and John Jefferson. His sister Mary McMicheal of Orangeburg, five sisters-in -law Ruby Gibson and Rebecca Grable of Bridgeport, Lilly Harris, San Antonio, TX, Maggie Funchess and Emma Perry of North, SC and two brothers-in-law James Roger Gibson and Eddie Gibson of North, SC and a special nephew David Gibson of North, SC, 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and counting, and a host of nieces, nephews and relatives.
